Being overweight affects more than one’s looks. It poses a hardcore risk to one’s health, and this risk increases with the amount of time one is overweight. Loosing weight diminishes the risk, and can reverse some of the medical complications of obesity.
- diabetes type 2 (increased blood sugar levels) – usually due to insulin resistance
- hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol and high triglyceride levels)
- coronary artery disease (angina) – due to formation of vascular plaque in the heart arteries
- other vascular complications – due to formation of plaque in other vessels in the body
- hypertension (elevated blood pressure)
- cerebrovascular accidents stroke) – due to formation of plaque in the arteries of the brain)
- arthritis – due to excessive wear and tear of the joints, as they are constantly subjected to high weight loads.
The risk of developing any of these conditions is considerably higher in persons that are overweight as compared to persons of normal weight. Furthermore, the risk is increasing with the amount of excessive weight. Therefore, regular medical attention is a good idea in this case, and is also indicated prior to starting a weight loss program.

- Prescription Weight Loss Medications (These are powerful appetite suppressants and central nervous stimulants, which are capable of inducing significant weight loss. However, they do have potentially serious side effects, including the risk of dependence. - Hypnotherapy for weight control (This usually consists of a course of weekly hypnosis sessions, in which the hypnotherapist “rewires” your subconscious mind as far as food is concerned, planting ideas such as: “you feel satisfied with lower amounts of food” “you never feel the urge to binge” “you are highly motivated to loose weight”, etc. If the therapy is successful, these hypnotic suggestions work effortlessly from your subconscious as you go through your daily routine. - Surgical measures (the most drastic of them all), do not necessarily entail stomach stapling. A less invasive procedure consists of laparoscopic gastric banding or Lap band surgery, using an inflatable silicone device which is inserted via a small orifice in the abdominal wall and wrapped around the upper portion of the stomach. The compression exerted by this device results in effective appetite suppression. Regular bariatric surgery (stomach stapling) works based on the same principle: By surgically reducing the size of the stomach, appetite is suppressed and food intake effortlessly diminished. Like any surgical approach, both these procedures carry certain risks. However, they are effective means of weight reduction and in certain cases can literally prove life-saving. They are reserved for persons with a BMI over 40, or a BMI over 35 concomitant with a serious medical condition related to obesity.
